What are the best times to view the moonrise off Makapuu?

The helpful folks of Oahu Hiking Enthusiasts (OHE) say that all you need is the time of the moonrise (available via most weather sources, including newspapers and online) and a clear night.

\"A full moon night is best for moonrise viewing because the moon rises at about the same time that the sun sets,\" notes OHE member Art. \"Exactly where it will rise changes too, through the seasons,\" adds Jay, \"but it would be hard to miss looking east from Makapuu and given a clear night.\"

The Honolulu page at Intellicast can give you the time of moonrise several days out, for example, and that\'s a good place to start. (Art recommends this Navy site.) The rest is just planning. We\'d guess a weekend with moonrise in the early evening beats a 2:15 a.m. Tuesday moonrise, for example.

Note that nature groups like the Hawaii Chapter of the Sierra Club have frequent organized hikes at Makapu`u, including moon-viewing night hikes (Makapu`u is rated as \"Easy\"). The Hawaiian Trail and Mountain Club (HTMC) also offers a full moon hike every year. They could even give you unofficial advice for a self-directed trip.

In fact, July 31, 2004 brings us a \"blue moon,\" an uncommon second full moon in a month, and both the Sierra Club and the HTMC have scheduled a hike to take in the magical sight. For more information on the Sierra Club hike, call Sylvianne Yee at 373-3062, Maile Sakamoto at 946-5712, or Sharon Reilly at 842-1995. For information on the annual HTMC hike, Call Carole Moon at 596-4864.
